i'm an expert at doing nothing

every one's supposed to be good for something. every single person is supposed to have at least one strength, one talent, one ability that makes them shine. i've thought for ages that i don't have one. for 31 years i've kicked around dirt on this planet wondering, "what am i here for?" "how do i, josh wells, make the world a better place?" as time dragged on, i began to lose hope. maybe i just suck at life and there's nothing about me that makes me special. i'm unspecial in all ways.

then it hit me..... i'm an expert at doing nothing. doing nothing is what i'm great at. it's what i excel at. i'm a certified black belt in the fine art of doing nothing. and it feels great to know it!

i'm sure you're asking yourself, "how does doing nothing make you special? how does it help improve our planet?" those are typical questions from unenlightened minds that don't get my craft. you're stuck in a rat race mentality looking for a piece of cheese, doing your best to get your piece before any of the other rats get theirs. you run your fastest, work your hardest, stress yourself out, and sacrifice your happiness in the present moment in the hopes that cheese will fill you with maximum contentment later on. i, on the other hand, take a nap. i relax. i chill out, put my legs up, maybe watch a little Sportscenter. i know there's plenty of cheese in the world. there's enough cheese for all of us.

my expertise in do-nothing-ness has lead me to abandon the race mentality. i still go after the things i need but i don't let it grind me down. i make sure i always have some quality "do nothing" time. i'm not trying to promote an existence where nobody does anything at all. however, the world could probably prosper if we as a species collectively learned to chill out a little more. lack of chilling out leads to freaking out. freaking out leads to suffering for you and maybe even others around you. it creates stress and all sorts of negativity that becomes contagious.

if you're having a bad day, take a nap. if the boss has been a total asshole all week, make sure you're weekend is filled with lots of doing nothing. you'll feel great. whatever it is that's getting you down, give doing nothing a shot.

there's so many ways to do nothing. it could be a movie marathon on the couch (make sure you got some snacks). you can try laying awake and staring at the ceiling while listening to music, or take a walk outside, sit around somewhere, maybe a park bench. doing nothing is a great way to recharge your battery, collect your thoughts, and let the negativity drain out of you. ample amounts of chill out time should lead to a more positive and happy existence.

but don't take it from me. just try it yourself.

expertly yours,

josh wells
